Site Selection and Master Planning

We often meet with clients as they are considering the purchase of a particular home or property. We help clients assess the overall condition of existing buildings and the feasibility of building, renovating, or adding on to an existing structure.

In Master Planning, we work to identify building sites on a chosen property and consider existing buildings, access, utilities, views, solar orientation, and wetlands as part of the process. If a client is considering outbuildings or recreational developments such as swimming pools or tennis courts, we study the location of these additions as well.

Building Program Development

A building program is a scope of work that outlines the uses and requirements that must be met in a project, the amount of indoor and outdoor space required, and the necessary relationship between spaces. Clients may have clear and specific ideas about a building program before engaging an architect, or they may be open to all possibilities at the outset. In either case, we work with you to develop a written document that guides the development of the design.

New Construction

The limitless possibilities offered by new construction can be exciting and intimidating.  We take a top-down approach, beginning with big picture questions about scope, budget, and the project site, and finishing with attention to details and craftsmanship. We do not consider ourselves to be bound by any particular aesthetic and have experience designing buildings that are both traditional and contemporary.  Regardless of style, we care deeply about the fundamental tenets of design. Principles of scale, proportion, order, and circulation are considered throughout the design process.  Most importantly, we aim to provide a finished project that fulfills your hopes and meets your needs.

Additions and Renovations

Sometimes the goal of the client and architect is to meld the aesthetics of a design into the context of an existing building. At other times, there may be a desire or functional need to make the addition stand apart. Regardless of the approach, we carefully consider the existing building in our addition and renovation work, preserving what is special about an existing building while increasing its functionality and usefulness in modern living. Our primary concern is to make sure that the scale and materials of the addition or renovation celebrate and enhance the original building.

Designing for Sustainability

We believe that we have a shared responsibility to preserve and protect the environment. One way we do this is to ensure that our designs are only as large as they need to be. By working with clients to reduce the size of their potential buildings, we ensure a positive impact both on the environment and on the budget for the project.  

We also extensively use passive heating and cooling strategies such as upgraded insulation, broad overhangs, natural ventilation, and solar orientation. The introduction of solar or geothermal technology is another consideration as is the use of recycled and recyclable materials and the avoidance of materials that are detrimental to indoor air quality.
